Jewelry: Worn to Adorn
We were delighted to open our 2011 - 2012 Lecture | Luncheon Series with Jewelry: Worn to Adorn on November 2, 2011. The Museum’s own Jane Hickman, PhD., editor of Expedition Magazine, presented a lecture about the changing cultural perceptions of beauty and how those have evolved through time, demonstrating how adornment using jewelry has been with us from ancient time to the present. Dr. Hickman incorporated some of the rarely seen and spectacular items from the Penn Museum's Collections to illustrate how jewelry had been employed for societal importance and personal expression. The lecture was followed by a wonderful luncheon complimented with fun filled activities including Jewelry Shopping, Appraisals and a Raffle Auction. For those of you who have missed the Luncheon, please enjoy the video Jewelry Worn to Adorn.
Thank you to all who joined us and helped support the Penn Musuem by participating in this very special event. If you were unable to attend we invite you to attend our other upcoming Lecture Luncheons.
Secrets of the Silk Road ~ Celebratory Opening
The fun filled evening included a Raffle-Auction for 10 prizes was held during cocktails. George H. McNeely, IV of Christie’s led a Live Auction of 11 items later in the evening. This was the first time that the Women’s Committee had offered the opportunity to bid on live auction items through their website. The Raffle-Auction items were donated by 26 businesses. Thirty-four donors contributed items for the Live Auction. Each special event contributed to the financially successful evening, which benefited the Penn Museum.
Guests included a significant number who had not attended Women’s Committee events in the past. A Chinese dragon from the Kung Fu Academy of Philadelphia led guests into the Rotunda for an extensive Chinese buffet dinner by Wolfgang Puck. The Philadelphia Chinese Association Choral Group of Radnor entertained during the meal.
The Women's Committee thanks our corporate sponsors who supported the event through advertisements in the program book.

2004-2008
TREASURES Show & Sale

Treasures Show & Sale was presented by The Women’s Committee for four years––from 2004 through 2008––to benefit the Museum’s educational and outreach programs.
The show offered show-goers the opportunity to purchase one-of-a-kind 18th-21st century pieces from around the world—antique and unique “discoveries” to enjoy for generations. Vetted antiques and artworks reflected the traditions of the countries in which the Penn Museum has conducted research for more than 100 years.
“This is the place to ‘shop the world,’ have a wonderful experience, and benefit the Penn Museum,” said founding chair of Treasures, Susan W. Catherwood.
Treasures was recognized by the Greater Philadelphia Tourism Marketing Corporation and Philadelphia Hospitality as one of Philadelphia’s top annual events.
